The Abcordial Religion does not advocate marriage or civil partnership as necessary foundations for a loving and committed relationship.
We believe that affection, loyalty, companionship and mutual responsibility arise from the freely chosen relationship between individuals, rather than from a legal contract or institutional status.
We are concerned that marriage and civil partnership can be entered into relatively easily while their breakdown may involve considerable legal, financial and emotional consequences. The dissolution of such unions can become adversarial and costly, with legal processes potentially benefiting professional intermediaries while further burdening individuals and families at an already difficult time.
The Abcordial Religion therefore encourages relationships founded upon continuing mutual consent, equality, honesty and personal responsibility, without requiring marital or civil union.
We nevertheless respect the right of every individual to marry, enter a civil partnership, remain unmarried, or structure their personal relationships according to their own beliefs and circumstances.
